In addition to providing tracking dogs, we support owners by advising how and where to place lost pet flyers, how to use humane traps, game cameras, and how to use social media. We also educate owners about lost pet behavior and how to interact with a scared pet.
How Tracking Dogs Work
Dogs have an amazing sense of smell and are able to follow days-old trails that are miles long. Tracking dogs are an excellent tool when searching for a lost pet. Even when a pet is not found during a track, the tracking dog can give valuable information, such as the direction of travel, hot spots a pet may return to, and ruling out possible search areas.
Our search dogs work off the specific odor of the lost pet. A scent article is collected for the team to work with. The scent article is something that a pet has come into contact with recently and will have a good amount of scent left by the missing pet. Pet beds, blankets, collars, and brushes usually make good scent articles.
Our search team will start at the last place a lost pet was seen. The handler has the search dog smell the scent article and then cues them to start the track. The search dog will search the area for the lost pet's scent and then will follow their trail. Trailing with a search dog is a combination of the dog's ability and the handler's expertise. Together the team can follow a track for miles.
